Course Description: Master of Research
Transforming education for the future
In a period when society and business have sought answers to unprecedented and rapidly escalating challenges, fundamental and applied research has provided answers. As a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous future evolves, research skills are ever more crucial in enabling society and business to innovate in response to political, economic, societal, technological and ecological change. In this context, HELI is proud to offer its newly accredited Master of Research.
The Master of Research has been accredited by TEQSA. This course is specifically designed to develop the skills needed to design and conduct research in educational and professional settings in response to these challenging times. This course is offered face-to-face at HELI’s Melbourne Campus (for all International Students) and online (available for Domestic students only).

Course Learning Outcomes
The course learning outcomes for the Master of Research are:
- Devise research problems and questions that respond to a gap in disciplinary theory or a real word challenge
- Appraise philosophical framework to select research methods and designs that are congruent with research problems
- Construct theoretical or best practice frameworks that form the basis of research projects based on existing theory or practice or both
- Design ethically justified research projects employing appropriate research methods
- Compose a research proposal, demonstrating the capacity to scope and design research projects independently
- Develop original research, demonstrating the ability to conduct research projects independently
- Defend research finding in a variety of academic and professional settings
- Produce research outputs evidencing mastery
Course Structure
To qualify for the award, students are required to successfully complete the five (5) core units listed below (equivalent to a total of 96 credit points).

*A unit worth 6 credit points is equal to 0.125 Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (EFTSL).
^In the first trimester, students are required to complete three units: RES821, RES822, and RES823. In the second trimester, students will take RES824 and RES921.
Admission and English Language Requirements
For entry to the Master of Research course, applicants must have graduated from their bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least a credit average (>65%). Additional English language requirements for international students are provided in tab below.
For more information on admission requirements including special entry requirements, please refer to the HELI Admission Policy.
Applicants with international qualifications not delivered in English must demonstrate English equivalency as follows:
- Academic IELTS: 6.5 or higher overall with no band lower than 6.0; OR
- IBT (Internet-based TOEFL) overall score of 79 with a writing section minimum of 21 and speaking 18; OR
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Overall score 180, writing and speaking 180; OR
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): Overall 176 with a writing and speaking minimum score of 169; OR
- PTE Academic Module with a minimum score of 58 with a writing and speaking section minimum of 50; OR
- English For Academic Purposes Level 2 (EAP 2): Upper Intermediate ‘A’ grade or higher with IELTS 6.5 requirement.

FEE-HELP (For Domestic Students)
FEE-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan available to eligible students enrolled in HELI Courses in order to help pay all or part of their tuition fees.
FEE-HELP is available for all Units of Study for eligible students.
